About Plasma

Why is plasma so important in medicine?

Plasma protein therapies that treat life-threatening disorders and illnesses consist of one main ingredient: plasma. These therapies are uniquely valuable to patients. Without plasma and the critical proteins it contains, these treatments would be unavailable, and many lives could be negatively impacted or even lost. Our strategic goal for plasma is "to ensure the availability of safe, high-quality plasma for fractionation."
Plasma protein therapy is essential in everyday medicine, especially for life-threatening diseases and urgent surgical cases – such as burns and complex procedures, including transplants. Plasma is also crucial for blood clotting disorders, immune system issues, and serious lung and liver diseases.

What life-saving substances does blood plasma contain?

  • Albumin: used for treating blood loss and burns
  • Immunoglobulins: for patients with cancer and weakened immune systems
  • Clotting factors: Hemophiliacs rely on factors VIII and IX

What medicines are produced from blood plasma?

The health and lives of thousands of people depend on plasma-derived medicines. Plasma is also used to produce concentrates for vaccines, which cannot be made or substituted in any other way. These medicines are also administered to patients during bleeding, burns, and other emergencies.
Plasma-derived medicines include:

  • Biseco
  • Varitect CP
  • Albiomin
  • Pentaglobin
  • Haemitoctin CDH
  • Cytotect
  • NeoHeptect
  • Intratect
  • Zutectra

How many donations are needed to produce certain plasma-derived medicines?

  • For the production of a concentrate – a medicine for a rare disease (e.g., congenital alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency), up to 1,000 plasma donations are required.
  • For congenital immunodeficiency (immune defect), with intravenous administration of immunoglobulins, at least 140 plasma donations per year are needed.

What else is plasma used for in medicine?

Plasma protein therapies are treatment methods that patients with well-defined medical conditions rely on. Plasma-derived therapies and their recombinant analogs, collectively referred to as plasma protein therapies, are unique biological medicines.

  • Immunology-Immunodeficiencies
  • Neurology-Immune-mediated diseases
  • Hematology

Clotting factors

  • Bleeding from trauma
  • Over dosage of anticoagulants
  • Liver disease
  • Bleeding Disorders
  • Other rare coagulation disorders
  • Improved quality of life
  • Increased life expectancy

C1 esterase inhibitor

  • Hereditary Angioedema
  • Improved quality of life
